About the film

What it’s about

After his Grand Embassy, Peter I returns to Russia and launches a prolonged war against Sweden for access to the Baltic Sea. Between 1698 and 1709, he faces setbacks, treachery, and deceit while laying the foundations of a future empire.

What hooks you

The film draws on a pivotal decade in Russian history, from the Grand Embassy to the Battle of Poltava. Aleksandr Gorbatov plays Peter I, with Miloš Biković as Alexander Menshikov. Locations include Saint Petersburg, Moscow, and the Leningrad and Tula regions. The production was initially announced with Alexey Nuzhnyy directing and Biković as Peter, but the final version is directed by Andrei Kravchuk and Alexey Nuzhnyy.
