About the film

Booster: Somebody who steals clothes from a store and sells them at a discount price, aka community service.

What it’s about

Corvette, an aspiring designer, leads a group of friends in robbing Metro Designers stores and reselling the clothes for half price. She admires the brand's head, Christie Smith, until a meeting reveals Smith stole her design. The robberies become personal revenge and social justice.

What hooks you

Boots Riley writes and directs. Riley wanted the visuals to look 'janky' rather than polished, and Panavision built special lenses combining modern brightness with vintage soft focus and color. Costume designer Shirley Kurata gave each character separate wardrobes for daily life and heists, designing Corvette's outfits as if Corvette made them herself.

Who it’s for

It will appeal to those who like absurdist comedy with a sharp social edge, and to viewers who enjoy stories about fashion, rebellion, and unconventional heists.

Director Boots Riley
  1. Boosters in the title is a slang word meaning people who steal branded clothing from expensive stores and sell it cheaper.
  2. According to director, screenwriter and producer Boots Riley, the film's visuals were deliberately made "janky" (a term used to describe something of low quality, faulty or unreliable). He did not want everything in the film to look spick-and-span and flawless.
  3. Will Poulter himself suggested lightening his character's hair.
  4. British actress Naomi Ackie had to train an Auckland accent for the role.
  5. Panavision created special lenses for the shoot that combined the qualities of modern lenses (more light) and vintage ones (soft focus and color enhancement). According to Boots Riley, when an image becomes digitally sharp, color begins to lose meaning.
  6. Costume designer Shirley Kurata selected costumes for the characters based on the premise that each of them contains different personalities. The characters had a separate wardrobe for everyday life and a separate one for store robberies.
