Boosters in the title is a slang word meaning people who steal branded clothing from expensive stores and sell it cheaper.

According to director, screenwriter and producer Boots Riley, the film's visuals were deliberately made "janky" (a term used to describe something of low quality, faulty or unreliable). He did not want everything in the film to look spick-and-span and flawless.
