Filming took place in Almería, Spain.

On the wave of the success of the horror film Evil Dead Rise, producer James Wan approached director Lee Cronin with an offer to make a new film about a mummy. He agreed, but decided to show the story from a different angle, one more focused on horror.

The film was initially titled "The Mummy," but producer Jason Blum added director Lee Cronin's name to the title to distinguish it from other mummy films.

According to director and screenwriter Lee Cronin, the film's plot was inspired by his personal experience with the death of his mother, who passed away on the same day he finished working on the film "Evil Dead Rise."

The mummy's appearance was inspired by the look of bog bodies that Lee Cronin saw at the National Museum of Ireland while preparing for the shoot.

For the mummy's makeup, flesh-colored latex and paper-like materials were used.
