Sir Patrick Stewart dreamed of playing the role of Jafar. The actor once turned down an offer to work on the Walt Disney Pictures animated film «Aladdin» (1992), which he has since sincerely regretted.

Besides Naomi Scott, Tara Sutaria was also considered for the role of Jasmine.

Abu and the Cave of Wonders were again voiced by Frank Welker, as in the 1992 animated film Aladdin. He became the first actor from a Disney animated film to voice the same characters in a remake where animation alternates with live action.

When Jin shows Aladdin the map, you can spot Disney's theme parks on it – "Fantasyland", "Tomorrowland", "Adventureland" and "Magic Kingdom".

Filming was scheduled to begin in July 2017, but it had to be postponed because the filmmakers simply could not find actors for the roles of Aladdin and Jasmine.

The filmmakers specifically sought out actors with particular backgrounds for the shoot. In the end, the role of Aladdin went to Canadian actor of Egyptian descent Mena Massoud, Jasmine was played by English actress of Indian descent Naomi Scott, the role of Jafar was played by Dutch actor of Tunisian descent Marwan Kenzari, Iranian-Americans Navid Negahban and Nasim Pedrad played the Sultan and Dalia respectively, and actor of Turkish-German descent Numan Acar appeared on screen as Hakim.

Filming in the UK began on September 6, 2017, and ended on January 24, 2018. Some scenes were shot in Jordan. Reshoots took place in August 2018. In January 2018, it became known that during filming, white extras were given makeup so they would not stand out from the crowd, which caused a scandal. The producers were accused of hiring too few actors of Middle Eastern and North African origin.

In all previous projects, Iago was invariably voiced by Gilbert Gottfried, but now Iago spoke with the voice of Alan Tudyk.
