A turning point in his career was meeting director André Téchiné, who offered the actor a role in the film The Thieves. From the "young thug" type, Magimel successfully moved into the "romantic hero" type. The film The Piano Teacher brought the actor the Cannes Film Festival award in the Best Actor category.
