Biography

Freya Mavor is a Scottish actress who became known after playing the role of Mini McGuinness in the youth series Skins. Freya Mavor was born in Glasgow, United Kingdom. Her father, James Mavor, an award-winning playwright, teaches a screenwriting course at Edinburgh Napier University. Her grandfather, Ronald Bingo Mavor, before becoming head of the Scottish Arts Council, worked as a theatre critic at The Scotsman from the 1960s. Freya's great-great-grandfather, James Bridie (real name Osborne Mavor), changed the Scottish theatre landscape by founding a drama college in 1950, the predecessor of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

Freya's mother has Irish and Danish roots. Freya became interested in acting at the age of 10 after watching the film The Shining. For a time, Freya lived with her family in La Rochelle, France. She studied at the Collège Eugène Fromentin (La Rochelle), at Mary Erskine School in Edinburgh, and was a member of the National Youth Theatre from 2008. Mavor first tried her hand at acting at school, playing Miranda in a production of Shakespeare's The Tempest, and also took part in a production of Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice at the National Youth Theatre.
