Courteney Cox was born into a wealthy family. Her father, Richard L. Cox, was a businessman, and her mother, also named Courteney, was a homemaker. Courteney has two older sisters (Dottie Pickett and Virginia Cox), an older brother (Richard, Jr.), and nine half-siblings. Her parents divorced in 1974, her father moved to Florida, and Courteney was raised by her mother and stepfather, New York businessman Hunter Copeland.

Cox grew up in Mountain Brook, Alabama. There she graduated from high school, where she was a cheerleader, a tennis player, and a swimmer. After that, Cox enrolled at Vernon University in Washington to study architecture and interior design. A year later, she dropped out for a modeling career after being accepted by the Ford modeling agency in New York. As a model, she took acting classes and eventually got rid of her Southern accent.
