Biography

Cyril Aris is a Lebanese director and screenwriter, a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences®.

His first narrative feature film, "A Sad and Beautiful World" (2025), was shown at the Venice Film Festival in the Giornate Degli Autori program, where it received the Audience Award. The film was selected as Lebanon's official submission for the Academy Award® for Best International Feature Film at the 98th ceremony.

The film was also shown at BFI London, Palm Springs, San Francisco IFF, and Seminci (Valladolid), where it received the Audience Award, as well as the Best Screenplay Award at Red Sea (Saudi Arabia), the Best Music Award at Cinémed (Montpellier), the Grand Prix at Rencontres Cinématographiques in Cannes, the Best Film Award at Asian World (Los Angeles), the Best Film Award at Tromsø FF (Norway), the Jury Prize at MedFilm (Rome), and audience awards in Barcelona, Florence, Ljubljana, Ottawa, Trondheim, and other cities.

His documentary film "Dancing on the Edge of a Volcano" (2023) was shown in competition at Karlovy Vary and received a special jury mention. It was shown at BFI London, CPH:DOX, and more than 80 festivals around the world. His debut feature film "Swing" (2018) was also shown at Karlovy Vary and received numerous international awards.
