Biography
Ella Lily Hyland is an Irish actress. She is from Carlow, Ireland; her grandfather Dinnie Hyland was an Irish pole vault record holder. Her cousin Jamie Hyland is an All-Ireland Schools athletics champion. Until her teenage years she trained in pole vault and long jump. She was a member of the County Carlow Youth Theatre and the National Youth Theatre; in 2015 she performed at Dublin's Project Arts Centre in Carmel Winters' play "Salt Mountain". She graduated from The Lir academy in Dublin.
Hyland starred alongside Aidan Turner in the 2023 Amazon Prime Video tennis drama "Fifteen-Love". Hyland prepared for the tennis scenes, and on set she was helped by tennis coach and former professional Naomi Cavaday. Lucy Mangan in The Guardian called her performance "mesmerising" and "absolutely superb", noting that she shows "many facets" of her character — "unpleasant, vulnerable, grief-stricken, a case of forced adulthood and arrested development [all] at once". Donal Lynch in the Irish Independent praised her "magnificent central performance" with "a mixture of vulnerability and awareness, while the shy and careless delivery of lines often conceals the confusion in her eyes". She can be seen in the 2023 Scottish film "Silent Roar".
In 2024 she starred in the Netflix series "Black Doves" led by Keira Knightley; the Evening Standard called her the series' "breakout star". In September 2024 Hyland made her Abbey Theatre debut, playing the title role in Lady Gregory's play "Grania", which ran until the following month.
Hyland has a role in Steven Knight's historical drama "A Thousand Blows" (2025). She can also be seen in the BBC's 2025 adaptation of Agatha Christie's novel "Towards Zero" as Audrey Strange — a character Hyland described as "perverse, nihilistic and hedonistic".
