   At the age of three, Josh began playing keyboard instruments, at five - the piano, at nine - the clarinet, at eleven - the drums; he was the captain of a two-hundred-member school orchestra, playing drums in it; while in middle school, he was a member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, playing clarinet in it; in addition, he plays the harmonica and guitar.

   Josh was born to Linda and Charles Pence; his father is a real estate agent, his mother is an elementary school teacher, and he has a younger brother, Jason Pence.

   Josh graduated in 2000 from Santa Monica High School, a public high school in Santa Monica, California, and in 2004 from Dartmouth College, a private college in Hanover, New Hampshire; he also studied at the Free University of Berlin, where he studied German language, German history, and German culture.
