After leaving a Catholic boys' high school, where he played hockey, he enrolled in a free public school, balancing his studies with acting work. On January 8, 2000, their daughter was due to be born, whom he planned to name Ava Archer Syme-Reeves. But a week before the birth, the doctor could no longer hear the baby's heartbeat; an ultrasound showed that the girl had died in the womb, and the cause of death was a blood clot in the umbilical cord.
