About the film

Hell wants him. Heaven won't take him. Earth needs him.

What it’s about

John Constantine has been to Hell and back. Born with the ability to see angels and demons disguised as humans, he once tried to end his life to escape the visions. Resurrected against his will, he now walks the line between the mortal world and the infernal, hoping to earn salvation by fighting evil. When police detective Angela Dodson asks for his help investigating her twin sister's apparent suicide, Constantine is drawn into a deeper conflict over the fate of human souls.

What hooks you

Keanu Reeves stars as the tormented Constantine, with Rachel Weisz as the detective whose sister's death pulls him into the case. The film is based on the Hellblazer comic series, and its production notes reveal that the character was originally British but became Californian to suit Reeves. It received a Saturn Award nomination for Best Horror Film.

Who it’s for

It is a good pick for those who enjoy supernatural noir with a cynical hero, religious mythology turned into action, and a dark vision of angels and demons in contemporary Los Angeles.

Director Francis Lawrence
  1. When the angel (Tilda Swinton) gives Constantine a lecture, hospital wristbands can be seen on her hands. In the overhead shots, the wristbands on her left hand behave calmly and lie flat. But in the shots where the camera rotates 90 degrees, one of the wristbands keeps sticking out.
  2. In the scene where a shocked Angela rushes to the window with a view of the sky, no bars are visible on the window. However, when she is shown in a close-up near the windowsill, a diamond-patterned grille is clearly visible.
  3. The film is based on the 1988 comic book series «Hellblazer». John Constantine first appeared in Alan Moore's comic Swamp Thing.
  4. According to the original plan of the production team, the filming of the picture was to be entrusted to Tarsem Singh, and Nicolas Cage was to be cast in the lead role. However, the director was against Nicolas's casting from the very beginning and ultimately left the project. After some time, Nicolas Cage followed suit.
  5. Despite the fact that the film Constantine was based on the plot of the comic book Hellblazer, it was decided to give the film a different title to avoid confusion with another similar title, Hellraiser.
  6. In the comic book, the main character John Constantine was originally from Liverpool, but in the film he became a native of California. In many ways, this decision was due to the choice of the actor playing the lead role. Keanu Reeves is a typical American, and it is unlikely he could have convincingly played a Brit.
