Biography
Lavrente "Lav" Indico Diaz (born December 30, 1958) is a Filipino independent director and former film critic. He is known as one of the key representatives of the slow cinema genre, creating thematically diverse, some of the longest narrative films exploring social and political issues, minimalist storytelling, long takes, and cinematic form.
Although Diaz has been making films since the late 1990s, he did not attract much public attention outside the Philippines and the festival circuit until the release of "Norte, the End of History," which was included in the Un Certain Regard program of the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. His next three films received great critical attention and numerous awards: the 2014 film "From What Is Before" brought him the Golden Leopard at the 2014 Locarno International Film Festival, as well as an Asian Film Award nomination for Best Director; the 2016 film "A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery" competed for the Golden Bear at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival and received the Alfred Bauer Prize; and the 2016 film "The Woman Who Left" competed at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival and received the Golden Lion.
