Thea was born into the family of dietitian Emily Patterson and lawyer Anthony Pantaleoni. Leoni's mother is a Texas native of Anglo-Saxon descent, while her father has mixed Italian and Polish roots. Thea is a great-niece of actor Hank Patterson, and her paternal grandmother is public figure and actress Helenka Pantaleoni, daughter of cellist Joseph Adamowski and pianist Antonina Szumowska. Leoni's paternal great-grandfather was the brother of Italian politician and economist Maffeo Pantaleoni.
