When Tim had not yet left England, he lived together with Lori Baker. In 1984 she gave birth to his son Jack. But when Roth decided to move to the USA, he abandoned both her and his son. True, afterward he still took Jack to live with him.

Once, when Tim was a child, he went to the theater with some friends, and during the performance they made such a ruckus that one of the actors stopped the show and ordered the young troublemakers to leave the auditorium. In 1992, at the Sundance Film Festival, Tim met designer Nikki Butler. On January 25, 1993, they married. Tim and Nikki have two sons: Timothy Hunter, born in 1995, and Michael Cormac, born in 1996.

After finishing high school, Tim went to study sculpture at the Camberwell College of Arts. But after a year he dropped out, as he dreamed of becoming an actor.
