In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina turns Memorial hospital into a refuge for around a thousand residents. As floodwaters rise, the building loses power and generators fail. Doctors, nurses, and patients are trapped for five days with dwindling food, water, and medicine, while the city outside descends into chaos and evacuation is delayed.

- Shortly after the publication of Sheri Fink's book (she became one of the project's screenwriters), Scott Rudin acquired the film rights in 2013. It is said that by 2017 the rights had expired. Rudin was offered to adapt the novel for television as the third season of the series American Crime Story with Sarah Paulson in the role that Vera Farmiga played in the series by John Ridley, Wendy Stanzler, and Carlton Cuse, but the adaptation never came to fruition, and in 2019 Rudin resumed attempts to find a home for the novel.
