Having found Irina's friend Alla with Denis's help, Volkov and Zhanna learn that shortly before her death Irina, who denied herself everything, suddenly became rich and acquired expensive jewelry.
Volkov receives a statement from a chance witness to the murder of Yuliya. However, when Volkov and Tarabrin arrive at the scene, they find no body.
The repeat offender Kozyrkov is found murdered in his own apartment, wearing handcuffs with his eyes gouged out. Suspicion falls on Kozyrkov's acquaintance, a certain Zhechkin, who was seen leaving the murdered man's apartment. However, Zhechkin turns out to be a police officer who had been planted undercover in the gang of Shaban, for whom Kozyrkov worked.
During an armed robbery at a restaurant, Gerhard Leuke, an employee of the Berlin Museum of Art, is killed. Collector Petr Tkachev, who was present at the moment of the tragedy, claims that the German had come to meet him to discuss the terms of transferring a rare Russian coin — the Konstantinovsky ruble — for an exhibition in Germany.
