About the series
Truth matters.
What it’s about
Each episode opens with a serious crime, often drawn from real headlines. Detectives gather evidence and question suspects until an arrest is made. The case then moves to the district attorney's office, where prosecutors must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The two teams operate independently but with equal weight in the criminal justice system.
What hooks you
The series ran for 23 seasons and 480 episodes, making it one of the longest-running American dramas. It won two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Emmys, including Best Drama Series in 1997. Sam Waterston plays Executive ADA Jack McCoy, and Jerry Orbach appears as Detective Lennie Briscoe. Dennis Farina, who plays Joe Fontana, was a Chicago police officer for 18 years before acting. The show's slogan is "The Story Is Everything."
Who it’s for
It is worth a look for anyone who enjoys methodical investigations that move from the crime scene to the courtroom, and for those who like seeing both sides of the legal process in a realistic urban setting.

Trivia
- Detective Mike Logan's leather coat was not provided by the props department. Actor Chris Noth bought it himself at a second-hand store.
- On some days Jill Hennessy could not take part in filming (for example, when courtroom scenes were shot), and her sister Jacqueline stood in for her.
- Before becoming an actor, Dennis Farina, who plays Detective Joe Fontana, worked for 18 years in the Chicago police force. He was brought into film by his former partner Chuck Adamson, who retired and became a consultant on police procedures for film and television.
- S. Epatha Merkerson wears a wig in the series. The actress decided that her own hairstyle did not suit the image of the ambitious officer Anita Van Buren well enough.
- Vanessa Williams auditioned for the role of Deputy District Attorney Abbie Carmichael, but the role went to actress Angie Harmon because series creator Dick Wolf liked her Southern accent.
