In 2003, a mutated Cordyceps fungus begins infecting humans worldwide, destroying modern civilization within days. Twenty years later, Joel, a survivor living in the Boston quarantine zone under military control, agrees to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old orphan, outside the walls in exchange for supplies. What seems like a simple job becomes a cross-country journey through ruined cities and wilderness, where they must depend on each other to survive both the infected and hostile human factions.
