Doniphan and seven friends chosen by lot set off on a two-month voyage aboard a schooner. Along the way they find a bottle and rush to the aid of two shipwreck survivors.
Forbes and Pike, the shipwreck survivors, come to and organize a mutiny. The pirates intend to demand a ransom for the "young gentlemen" to finance their search for treasure on a fabled island.
The young men manage to escape, and together with the cabin boy and a sailor they set sail on the "Sloughi". Unfortunately, the sailor dies and the cabin boy lacks the knowledge, so the nine youths drift toward the Pacific Ocean. Meanwhile, Forbes and Pike have informed Lord Buchanan of the hostage-taking.
The sailing ship is caught in a storm, the cabin boy is injured, and quarrels break out. Everyone wants to impose his will. Things go from bad to worse when land finally appears. The Frenchman Briant swims to shore to stretch a rope and bring the raft across. The youths are saved... for now. Meanwhile, Forbes and Pike devise a cunning plan to extort the ransom without returning the runaway children.
Settling in on the island begins. Between hidden traps and personalities that constantly clash, the youths must choose a leader. Gordon is elected and successfully organizes a small colony. But in winter, Service spots a strange man before falling from a cliff. Meanwhile, Forbes and Pike use the ransom money to buy a ship so they can search for their treasure island.
Service, saved from the cold and a fall into the abyss, tells of his adventure, but no one believes him. In spring it becomes harder and harder for the youths to tolerate one another, and Doniphan, Briant and Service leave the others to go in search of adventure. However, they will have to come together with the arrival of Forbes and Pike...
