About the series

The work never stops.

What it’s about

At a Pittsburgh trauma hospital, doctors and nurses face a relentless stream of critical cases in an underfunded emergency department. The series compresses a single shift into real time, tracking how the team copes when every decision can mean life or death.

What hooks you

Noah Wyle stars as Dr. Michael Robinavitch, with Tracy Ifeachor as Dr. Heather Collins. The series earned the 2026 Golden Globe for Best Drama Series and six Emmys, including Best Drama Series and Best Actor for Wyle. Its real-time structure heightens the pressure of an overcrowded ER, while the cast and crew bring a documentary-like immediacy to the medical crises.

Who it’s for

It is a good pick for those who like medical dramas with a fast, unrelenting pace and a focus on procedure under pressure. It will also suit viewers drawn to stories about overstretched public institutions and the personal cost of frontline work.

Trivia

  1. In the early stages of work on the project, director John Wells and actor Noah Wyle wanted to make a sequel to their own highly successful project ER (1994-2009). Wyle would have returned to the role of Dr. John Carter. Unfortunately, they were unable to obtain permission to film a direct sequel from the rights holder (the heirs of writer and screenwriter Michael Crichton), so the concept of the project had to be changed somewhat.
