In the early stages of work on the project, director John Wells and actor Noah Wyle wanted to make a sequel to their own highly successful project ER (1994-2009). Wyle would have returned to the role of Dr. John Carter. Unfortunately, they were unable to obtain permission to film a direct sequel from the rights holder (the heirs of writer and screenwriter Michael Crichton), so the concept of the project had to be changed somewhat.
