What it’s about
On the island of Inisherin in 1923, Pádraic Súilleabháin is a friendly farmer whose daily routine includes calling on his best friend, Colm Doherty, to walk to the pub. One day Colm refuses to speak to him, and when pressed, he says Pádraic is too dull and threatens to cut off one of his own fingers if Pádraic keeps bothering him. Pádraic's sister Siobhán and the young Dominic Kearney are caught in the fallout as the two men's standoff escalates.
What hooks you
Martin McDonagh wrote and directed this film, which won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Screenplay, and the BAFTA for Best British Film and Best Original Screenplay. Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson play the estranged friends, and Kerry Condon won the BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress as Siobhán. The screenplay is based on a play by McDonagh, and the pub set was built on Achill Island without permission and had to be demolished after filming.
Who it’s for
It is a good pick for those who like character-driven drama with a streak of black comedy, set in a small community where personal grievances take on outsized importance. It will suit viewers who appreciate sharp dialogue and the tension of a friendship turned sour.
