The banshee in Irish folklore, or among the inhabitants of the Scottish Highlands, is a type of fairy—a harbinger of death.

A pub was built specifically for the filming on Achill Island near the west coast of Ireland in County Mayo. The filmmakers did not have permission for this, so the building had to be demolished after filming was completed.

All the sweaters of the main characters were hand-knitted by one old man. In addition, he knitted each sweater in two copies.

During filming, Colin Farrell had several unpleasant moments with animals. He was kicked by the donkey Jenny when he was feeding her from his hand. He was bitten by the dog that played the dog of the character played by Brendan Gleeson. And finally, the horse harnessed to the cart carrying the character played by Colin Farrell almost tipped him into the water.

Jenny, the donkey of Colin Farrell's character (the animal was indeed named Jenny), had never appeared in a film before. Jenny was not trained for the filming, and she did not particularly enjoy taking part in it. Farrell himself joked that on set she behaved like a real movie star. In some scenes, instead of Jenny, they had to film her double – a donkey with sufficient experience in filming.
