Her father served as a general in the British Army, and her mother was a housewife. She studied at the University of Cambridge. She works as an actress, producer, and screenwriter. She was in a relationship with artist John Byrne, and the couple has twins: a son, Xavier, and a daughter, Honor. Since 2004, she has been in a relationship with artist Sandro Kopp. In 2021, she came out as queer.
