About the film

Magic. Mystery. Marmalade.

What it’s about

Paddington, now happily settled with the Browns, wants to buy a unique antique book for his Aunt Lucy. He finds it in a London antique shop and takes odd jobs to afford it. But the book is stolen, and Paddington is drawn into a scheme by a once-famous actor who now uses his talent for disguise to hunt treasure hidden across London.

What hooks you

Hugh Grant plays Phoenix Buchanan, a faded actor who now advertises dog food and uses his gift for transformation to chase the treasure. Ben Whishaw voices Paddington, and Sally Hawkins appears as Mary Brown. Paul King directs and co-writes the screenplay. The film received a BAFTA nomination for Hugh Grant as Best Supporting Actor.

Who it’s for

It is a good pick for those who like gentle family comedy with a touch of adventure and a warm-hearted animal hero. It will also suit anyone fond of London settings, treasure hunts, and stories where kindness and good manners win the day.

Trivia

  1. English writer and screenwriter Michael Bond (1926-2017), the creator of Paddington Bear, died six months before the film was released.
  2. The address where the world's politest bear lives — Windsor Gardens, 32 in Notting Hill — does not actually exist. The writer Michael Bond invented it by "mixing" his parents' address on Winser Drive with his own — Arundel Gardens.
  3. After completing underwater filming for Guillermo del Toro's 2017 science fiction drama The Shape of Water, Sally Hawkins (who played Mary Brown in Paul King's film) flew from Toronto, Canada to London for filming, where she learned that she would also have underwater scenes there.
  4. A pop-up book for the film was released in a limited collector's edition; it contained six "pop-up" scenes shown in the film.
