About the film

In the beginning...

What it’s about

The Eternals, superpowered beings sent from Olympia, have secretly lived on Earth for thousands of years. Their mission: defend humanity from the Deviants, monstrous creatures that prey on civilization. Forbidden from interfering otherwise, they scattered after the last Deviant was destroyed. Now, a strange earthquake heralds a new Deviant, forcing them to reunite against a threat that could end everything.

What hooks you

Chloé Zhao, an Academy Award-winning director, brings her vision to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The cast includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Angelina Jolie as Thena, and Salma Hayek Pinault as Ajak. Zhao prefers practical filming over chroma key, as noted by Kumail Nanjiani, adding a grounded feel. The film features a diverse ensemble, including Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, a deaf character whose sign language was taught by her father.

Who it’s for

It will appeal to those who like superhero stories with cosmic scale and deep mythology. It will also appeal to those who enjoy character-driven drama within action fantasy, especially those interested in diverse representation and thought-provoking themes.

Director Chloé Zhao
  1. In the comics, Ajak, Makkari and Sprite are men. In the film adaptation they were made women. These roles were played respectively by Salma Hayek, Lauren Ridloff and Lia McHugh.
  2. According to actor Kumail Nanjiani, director Chloé Zhao prefers traditional filming over working with green screen technology.
  3. For the filming, Kumail Nanjiani followed a strict diet and trained with Grant Roberts, a trainer and holder of the Mr. Canada title. Nanjiani worked out at a gym in Beverly Hills five days a week for 3 months to build muscle mass.
  4. In November 2019, the film's cast and crew were urgently evacuated from the Canary Islands after an unexploded German bomb was discovered near the filming location.
  5. Because of her deafness, Lauren Ridloff found it difficult to act in scenes where her character (Makkari) interacts with digitally created characters, or in action scenes. Angelina Jolie (who played Thena) helped her by using a laser pointer.
  6. Lauren Ridloff's father coached the actors in the film in communicating in sign language.
