Biography
Alexey Vorobyov is a Russian singer and actor. Russia's representative at the Eurovision Song Contest 2011. As a student of a music college in the accordion class, Vorobyov performed at various competitions many times since childhood. After graduating, he decided to enter a music school in the vocal department. He was a soloist of the Tula folk ensemble "Uslada". In 2005 he became the winner of the IV Delphic Games of Russia in the "Folk Singing" category and received a gold medal for solo performance. In the same year he passed the casting of the TV competition "The Secret of Success". Having reached the final, he took third place. Then he moved to Moscow and entered the State Music College of Pop and Jazz Art. In 2006 he signed a contract with Universal Music Russia. In July 2006, during the G8 summit held in St. Petersburg, he was one of the performers of the anthem of the "Junior Eight" project, and also performed at a concert during its closing ceremony. In 2007, at the fourth MTV Russia Music Awards ceremony, Vorobyov received the "MTV Discovery" award.
In February 2008 he received the "Sound Track" prize from MK in the "Music and Cinema" category. In 2008, during the selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2008, with his song "New Russian Kalinka" he took fifth place in the final standings. However, according to some experts, his song deliberately violated the rules of the contest: it was not allowed to use the direct words of folk songs in the composition, so if he had won, Vorobyov could not have gone to represent Russia at the contest. In 2009 he again became one of the finalists of the national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest with the song "To Be an Angel", but was forced to withdraw his candidacy due to being busy with another project. In 2011 he signed a contract with music producer RedOne, known for working with Lady Gaga, Enrique Iglesias, Usher and others. According to the contract, Vorobyov performed under the pseudonym Alex Sparrow, which is an almost literal translation of the musician's surname.
