Biography
American actress. After graduating from the John Murray Anderson School of Theatre in New York, Bette Davis made her Broadway debut in 1929 in the play "Broken Dishes." Her success in film came in 1934, when she played the lead role in the film adaptation of Somerset Maugham's novel "Of Human Bondage." In the forties, Bette Davis was one of the most famous and respected film actresses in the world. She appeared in the films "Juarez," "A Stolen Life," "A Pocketful of Miracles," "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane," "Death on the Nile," "The Whales of August," and others.
In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Bette Davis second on its list of the greatest actresses in Hollywood history. She was the first person in the history of world cinema to be nominated for 10 Oscars. She died of breast cancer in 1989.

In 1982, the US charts were topped by country singer Kim Carnes' song "Bette Davis Eyes." The title of this song refers to Bette Davis's legendary "fish" eyes. In the 1940s, filmmakers went out of their way to emphasize the unusual nature of her eyes and gaze through lighting and makeup.
