Biography

American actor. The American Film Institute named Bogart the greatest actor in the history of American cinema.

After trying several occupations, Bogart became an actor in 1921, and during the 1920s and 1930s he appeared in Broadway productions. When the stock market crash of 1929 occurred, Bogart came to film. His first big success was a role in the film "The Petrified Forest" (1936), after which he appeared in gangster films, including "Angels with Dirty Faces" (1938), and in B movies such as "The Return of Doctor X" (1939).

The turning point in his career came in 1941 with the release of "High Sierra" and "The Maltese Falcon." "Casablanca" became the pinnacle of his career and cemented his screen image as a cynic who ultimately reveals his nobility. Other successful films followed, including "To Have and Have Not" (1944), "The Big Sleep," "Dark Passage" (1947), and "Key Largo" (1948), in which he appeared with Lauren Bacall; "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" (1948); "The African Queen" (1951), which earned him an Academy Award; "Sabrina" and "The Caine Mutiny" (1954).

His last screen appearance was in the film "The Harder They Fall" (1956). Over his nearly thirty-year film career, Bogart appeared in seventy-five feature films.
