Biography
Leslie Howard (real surname Steiner) was a British actor, producer and director. Leslie Howard's career as a stage actor began in 1918. He made his debut on the London stage in the production of the British playwright Arthur Pinero's "Ugly Ones". By the early 1920s Leslie had appeared in several more plays, mostly in supporting roles. In 1920 the actor went to America, made his Broadway debut in the tragicomedy "Just Imagine" and over the decade built an excellent theatrical career, appearing in a total of twenty productions.
The most successful of them were "The Green Hat", "Her Cardboard Lover" and "Escape" based on Galsworthy's play. In 1930 Leslie Howard made his debut in the sound film "Beyond the Limit". He appeared in the films "Gone with the Wind", "Pygmalion", "Romeo and Juliet", "Intermezzo", "The Animal Kingdom" and others. On 1 June 1943 flight No. 777 Lisbon-London, on which the actor was flying, was shot down over the Bay of Biscay by a German fighter. All were killed.

Leslie Howard died in June 1943. He was flying from Lisbon to London, and the plane he was on was shot down by German fighters over the Bay of Biscay. Later, rumors emerged that German intelligence believed Winston Churchill was supposed to be flying on that plane. These rumors were reinforced by the fact that Howard's impresario, returning to England on the same flight, resembled the British Prime Minister in build, while the actor himself resembled Walter Thompson, Churchill's bodyguard.
