In 1971, he left Columbia University, following his parents to Oklahoma. There he enrolled at the University of Oklahoma, where he became interested in theater. For the sake of the stage, he dropped out of his studies and went to Los Angeles, where the young actor was soon noticed. Later he studied at the California Institute of the Arts.

During his school years, he was actively involved in sports. He achieved significant success in American football and baseball, thanks to which he received a sports scholarship that allowed him to enroll at the prestigious Columbia University.
