Graduated from the Moscow Theater School named after Shchepkin (Nikolai Annenkov's course). After receiving an acting education, he left for Riga, played at the Riga Youth Theater under the direction of Adolf Shapiro. In 1988 he got the lead role in the crime drama "My Name Is Harlequin", based on Yuri Shchekochikhin's novella "Trap 46, Height 2". The success of the film was stunning, audiences stormed the cinemas. But Oleg Fomin was not threatened by star fever - others were invited to festivals, at "Belarusfilm" letters from his fans were burned in sacks, and journalists wrote nothing about him, too lazy to find the actor in Riga.

He was forced to leave Latvia in 1990, after the closure of the Riga Youth Theater. In Moscow he first made low-budget films. Then he directed TV series, among the most successful - "NEXT". He staged performances: "Nina" by A. Russen (Lenkom Theater, entreprise, 1997, Dmitry Kharatyan, Sergei Nikonenko, Elena Shanina), "Cave People" by William Saroyan.
