About the series

The truth lies in the dark.

What it’s about

In 1995 Louisiana, a woman is killed under strange circumstances. Detectives Rust Cohle and Marty Hart take the case. Seventeen years later, a similar murder prompts the police to reopen the old investigation and question the former partners. Their recollections of the original inquiry do not match, and the discrepancies expose secrets that both men have tried to keep buried. Each season of the series introduces a new setting and new investigators, but the pattern holds: a disturbing crime forces those involved to confront what they have hidden from themselves and others.

What hooks you

The series won two Emmy Awards, including one for its opening titles, and a Golden Globe. Jodie Foster received an Emmy for her role as Liz Danvers in the fourth season. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson lead the first season as the detectives whose accounts diverge. The show was created by Nic Pizzolatto, a Louisiana native, and the first season was filmed on the coastal plains of southern Louisiana.

Who it’s for

It is a good pick for those who like slow-burning investigations where the past haunts the present, and for viewers drawn to morally complex characters and atmospheric, philosophical crime stories.

  1. In the 2012 interrogation scenes of Cole and Hart, the detectives use a SONY NEX5 digital camera to record the testimony. This camera is not designed for continuous video recording longer than 10-15 minutes — the camera's sensor overheats and it switches off automatically. In addition, the camera's battery would not have lasted for the amount of operating time shown in the interrogation scenes.
  2. In episode 7, in the scene where Rust questions the former housekeeper, he holds her hand with his right hand. After the angle changes, in one of the shots Rust's right hand is visible, but it is not holding anything. Then, when Rust and Marty are sitting and drinking beer in the bar, the label on the bottle moves with every shot.
  3. In season 1, episode 4, at the 15th minute, Marty watches a stripper who drives a Subaru Legacy Lancaster with the BH body style. The Subaru with this body style has been produced since 1998, while the film is set in 1995.
  4. Sadarias Harrell gained 21 kilograms for the role of Detective Drew.
  5. The first season was filmed on the coastal plains of southern Louisiana, where its story also takes place.
  6. During the broadcast of the first season's finale, due to the huge number of requests, the streaming service HBO Go could not handle the load.
