About the film

Gluttony. Greed. Sloth. Envy. Wrath. Pride. Lust.

What it’s about

Detective Somerset is days from retirement, planning to leave the city and its sinners behind. His new partner, Mills, has a different temperament. Their first case together is a particularly elaborate murder, and Somerset quickly suspects it will not be the last. The killer appears to be punishing victims for the seven deadly sins, and the two detectives must work together to stop him.

What hooks you

David Fincher directs Brad Pitt as Mills and Morgan Freeman as Somerset. The film won Saturn Awards for Best Writing and Best Make-Up, and MTV Movie Awards for Best Movie, Most Desirable Male, and Best Villain. The screenplay by Andrew Kevin Walker was nominated for a BAFTA. The production's original ending was kept because Brad Pitt refused to participate if it was changed.

Who it’s for

It is worth a look for anyone who likes dark crime stories where the investigation is as much about the detectives' own flaws as the killer's. It will appeal to those who enjoy tension that builds slowly, with a focus on psychology and moral questions rather than action.

  1. The production team at «New Line Cinema» did not want to put the film into production for a long time because of its ending. A whole range of alternative endings was discussed (at least five), but the final word remained with Brad Pitt — he refused to take part in the filming if the film's ending were changed.
  2. During filming, Morgan Freeman would draw his gun from its holster with his finger on the trigger. Police officers present on set as technical advisors quickly corrected the actor, pointing out his mistake.
  3. Early versions of the script featured a strange, gnome-like woman who was part of the investigation team. After each murder, she would go to the crime scene, swear horribly, and make biting jokes at the expense of Somerset and Mills.
  4. An early version of the script had references to Mills' partner named Parsons. He was killed during a police raid. But the filmmakers decided to get rid of this storyline and removed all mentions of Parsons from the script before filming began.
  5. All of John Doe's books are real, written specifically for the film. It took about two months and 15 thousand dollars to write them.
  6. Somerset's metronome ticks seven times during the first scene of the film.
