Kostik Voloshin leads a double life: his job as a research fellow at a scientific institute is merely a cover for his card-sharping activities, in which he is an absolute pro. His goal is to "earn" money as quickly as possible so he can leave the country with his mother. Hiding from the powerful gambler Goga, from under whose nose Kostya snatched a big jackpot, the young man jumps on the first train he sees and ends up in Odessa, the city of his childhood.

In Odessa, Kostya gets into a scrape, but unexpectedly meets his father's brother, Balaban. Balaban is one of Odessa's criminal bosses. Voloshin rents a corner from old man Zamsh, a sharp card player in the past. Kostik quickly realizes that Zamsh's brilliant mind will help him pull off more than one profitable scheme.
