About the series

Ted's back.

What it’s about

A college football coach from Kansas is recruited by the new owner of an English soccer club. She hires him expecting he will ruin the team, but he arrives with no knowledge of the sport and an unshakable positive attitude. The players and staff are doubtful, yet his warmth and unusual methods begin to change the atmosphere around the club.

What hooks you

Jason Sudeikis stars as the title character, a role he first played in NBC Sports promos. Brett Goldstein, who plays Roy Kent, also serves as a screenwriter. The series won seven Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series in 2021 and 2022, and Sudeikis won two Emmys and a Golden Globe for his performance. Hannah Waddingham won an Emmy for her role as Rebecca Welton.

Who it’s for

It is a good pick for those who enjoy warm, character-driven comedies about workplace misfits and unlikely friendships. It will also appeal to viewers who like sports stories that focus on personal growth rather than game outcomes.

  1. When Ted Lasso runs out of Rebecca's office, he hits his head on the doorframe. This moment was not in the script; Jason Sudeikis really hit his head hard.
  2. Jason Sudeikis first played a character named Ted Lasso in a series of NBC Sports commercials dedicated to the English Premier League.
  3. The character Roy Kent is based on the Irish footballer and coach Roy Maurice Keane, who played in the Premier League from 1992 to 2006 for Nottingham Forest and Manchester United. Like Roy Kent, his prototype was the team captain and was known for a hot-tempered and aggressive attitude both on and off the pitch.
  4. The first two episodes were directed by Zach Braff, who, at the time filming began, happened to be in the United Kingdom by pure coincidence.
  5. It was originally intended that Brett Goldstein, who plays Roy Kent, would be the screenwriter, but he liked the role so much that he auditioned, sent the tape to producer Bill Lawrence, and got the part after all.
  6. Jason Sudeikis, who plays the main character, later said that his situation was quite similar to that of his character, because when the project was greenlit, he was going through a breakup with Olivia Wilde (in the series, Ted divorces his wife), so he also went to the United Kingdom (where filming took place) to grieve and pull himself together.
