Stan Smith works for the CIA and lives with his wife Francine, their children Hayley and Steve, and two non-human housemates. Roger, an alien Stan rescued from Area 51, stays hidden in the house and passes the time with costumes and alcohol. Klaus is a goldfish whose brain came from a German Olympic skier, stolen by the CIA to keep Germany from winning. Stan's extreme patriotism often leads him into overblown responses to perceived threats, while his family's differing views create friction at home.
