Stories from the set
What happened on set and off camera. No spoilers.
-
During production, the film had 48 versions of the script.
-
After test screenings, it was decided to reshoot some scenes with a total duration of 15 minutes.
-
Aleksandr Belyavsky's character (Uncle Sasha) appears in two scenes (in the bathhouse and at the airport) and is almost always silent, unlike Aleksandr Shirvindt's character. This is because Belyavsky had recently suffered a stroke and his speech had not fully recovered.
-
For the role of young Nadya, the screenwriter suggested Milla Jovovich. The script was sent to her, but she declined.
-
In almost every frame of the film, the combination of red and blue colors is persistently used (glasses on the table, ornaments on the Christmas tree, a red door on a blue wall leading into the apartment, and so on). The same colors appear on the balloons bearing the names of the main characters.

The film premiered in cinemas on December 20, 2007, while its television premiere took place only on January 1, 2010 (on Channel One). This gap between the theatrical and television showings was due to the terms of the contract, under which the film could not be shown on television earlier than two years after its cinematic release.
-
Almost all the leading actors from the first "Irony" took part in the second film, with the exception of Georgy Burkov (Zhenya Lukashin's friend Misha, the one who, according to him, "never gets drunk") — Burkov died in 1990, and Liya Akhedzhakova (Tanya; the film says she emigrated to Israel) refused to take part. Olga Naumenko (Galya) agreed to the filming but only managed to shoot one episode. Subsequently, the actress's schedule did not coincide with the director's, and further filming never took place. The scene featuring Galya was cut from the final version of the film.
-
Valentina Talyzina agreed to appear in the second film, but flatly refused to dub Barbara Brylska (speak for the older Nadya) again. The role of Nadezhda is voiced by Anna Kamenkova.
-
Alla Pugacheva performed the entire female part in the first film and the title song of the second part.

The filming in the St. Petersburg apartment took place in Prague. Unique sets were built for it. The creators built not one full-scale apartment set, but three at once: one complete, another without the left side, and a third without the right side.
