The childhood of the future director was difficult and half-starved. His mother, Praskovya Afanasyevna, worked as a seamstress and raised two children alone (an extremely hard life and backbreaking work took their toll - she died early, at the age of 52). Trying to get her children on their feet and give them an education, she hid from everyone all her life that her husband had been repressed. Stanislav and his older sister learned the truth about their father only after the 20th Party Congress.

In 1958 he graduated from the Faculty of Geology of Kazan State University and began working in his specialty. But he soon realized that geology was not his calling. It was precisely at this time that the first television studio opened in Kazan. Stanislav Govorukhin became one of its founders and was both a director and an editor of programs. But relations with the high-ranking Party authorities did not work out. In 1961 he was forced to leave for Moscow and enrolled in the directing faculty of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography. In 1966 he graduated with honors from VGIK, and his diploma work was the film "Vertical".
