Biography
American dancer and film actress, a legendary Hollywood star of the 1940s who became a sex symbol of her era.
She was born into the family of a famous Spanish flamenco dancer and a chorus girl from Florenz Ziegfeld's show. From the age of 12 she began performing with her father. She soon attracted the attention of 20th Century Fox and became an actress. Her first significant work was in Howard Hawks's film "Only Angels Have Wings" (1939). The high point of Hayworth's career was Charles Vidor's romantic melodrama "Gilda" (1946), which made her a goddess of the Hollywood Olympus. She also appeared in the films "Cover Girl," "The Lady from Shanghai," "Separate Tables," and others.
She was married several times; among her husbands was director Orson Welles, with whom the actress had a daughter, Rebecca. Hayworth's third husband was Prince Aly Khan, with whom she had a second daughter, Princess Yasmin Khan.
Rita Hayworth is included in the American Film Institute's list of the 100 greatest stars of cinema.
