In the cartoon, Stoick says «the damned beasts still won't give up!», «lead us home, devil!», «the abysses of hell will open!» — such concepts did not exist among the pagan Vikings; they appeared only with the advent of Christianity.

The film is based on the first books in Cressida Cowell's series "How to Train Your Dragon" (2003-2012)

Cressida Cowell's book did not have the warrior girl Astrid, but the directors and screenwriters decided that a bright female character was essential. Also, one of the twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut became female in the animated film.
